What is Student Finance and how does it work?Student Finance is a government service in the UK that provides financial support to students pursuing higher education. It helps cover tuition fees, living costs, and other related expenses. There are two main types of loans: Tuition Fee Loan - £9,250/year: This covers the cost of your course fees, which are paid directly to your university or college. You do not have to pay this back until you’ve finished your course and are earning above a certain income threshold. Maintenance Loan - up to £13,000/year depending on your circumstances: This loan helps with living costs such as accommodation, food, and transportation. The amount you receive depends on factors like household income, where you study, and whether you live at home or away. How It Works: You apply for Student Finance online, usually through the Student Loans Company (SLC). The loan is paid directly to your university (for tuition fees) and to your bank account (for maintenance). Repayments start once you've left your course and are earning above the minimum income threshold (currently £24,990 a year). Repayments are based on your income, not the amount borrowed.
